Hello and welcome to the latest issue of The Ghoulish Times. My name is Max Booth and this is my spooky newsletter. It is currently 01:00am and we need to be out the door by 07:00am, so prepare for a rare straight-to-the-point email. Here, my ghouls, are some things:
KILLERCON
Lori and I are at KillerCon this weekend—in Austin, TX. If you want to attend and haven’t already secured your badge, click HERE. We will have a vendor table for Ghoulish Books. Beyond selling books, here is my schedule for Friday:
4:00 p.m. - 7 Deadly Sins of Modern Dialogue (Writing dialogue that is appropriate to the times) - Moderator: RJ Joseph. Panelists: Kristopher Triana, Jeff Strand, Max Booth III, Judith Sonnet. Ever read a story that takes place centuries in the future or decades in the past yet uses modern slang? Or a story from a different culture that sounds suspiciously American? Or dialogue that is supposed to be of a younger generation that sounds outdated? Learn how to write dialogue that sounds authentic.
6:00 p.m. - Reading - Max Booth III
9:00 p.m. - THE KILLERCON WINGS OF PAIN CHALLENGE: FIERY FEUD!!! Hosts: Shane McKenzie and Max Booth III. Contestants: TBA Two teams of three will compete in a Family Feud-style gameshow. We will survey 100 random people with the most ridiculous extreme horror-themed questions. For each question, the losing team will have to face a death-soaked wing while the winning team watches and mocks them while eating ice cream or drinking an icy alcoholic beverage. There will be prizes, but more importantly, there will be punishments!
10:00 p.m. - ROLL THE DICE: Host: John Baltisberger. Players: Brian Keene, Christine Morgan, Bridget Brave, Maurice Broaddus, Max Booth III and Shane McKenzie. Curious about all this talk about tabletop roleplaying games and what the intersection with horror could possibly be? Join John Baltisberger and a host of your favorite horror authors as they play MORK BORG, the roleplaying game equivalent of black metal. Watch them dance through a murderous maze of body horror, cannibalism, and more than a few off-color jokes. Audience participation is encouraged.
And, on Saturday, here is Lori’s event:
11:30 a.m. - Layout and Design Workshop - A hands-on workshop on how to properly lay out your self-published masterpiece, led by Lori Michelle and Philip Reed!
GHOULISH CHALKBOARD ART
Here is the latest chalkboard quote I’ve placed out in front of our bookstore: “Banning us only makes us scarier.”
GHOULISH EXPANDS
We are very excited to announce that Mindy Rose has joined the Ghoulish team as our new Publicity Ghoul! We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Mindy, who is easily one of the most supportive and passionate people we've ever met in the indie horror community.
Mindy Rose unfortunately lives in South Dakota where she works as a bookseller and a helpline worker. She has had a lifelong obsession with all things horror, and in her free time she can be found reading, collecting medical antiques and bits of human corpses, and hurting her own feelings by thinking too hard about how much she loves her dog.
THE ONLY SAFE PLACE LEFT IS THE DARK
Physical copies of Warren Wagner’s The Only Safe Place Left is the Dark have finally arrived! Take a look and pre-order HERE.
BUNCHA GHOULS AT GHOULISH BOOKS
Yesterday, we were pleased to see several old and new friends, who are in the state for KillerCon and decided to drive down and check out the shop before the convention kicks off tomorrow: Lynne Hansen, Judith Sonnet, Bridgett Nelson, R.E. Shambrook, and Jeff Strand. Obligatory group photo with them, Lori, and myself:
I managed to record three new “Ghoulish Recs” videos with Jeff, Lynne, and Judith. If you missed the first episode, I’m now recording short videos with people in the horror genre wherein they walk through our shop talking about certain horror books we have in stock that mean something to them. We’re basically ripping off the “Criterion Closet” videos, if that gives you any idea.
In fact, episode 2—featuring my friend Miguel Myers—dropped yesterday on YouTube. Please check it out!
INDIANA DEATH SONG audiobook
I’ve uploaded the audiobook production of my novella Indiana Death Song on Patreon. You can listen to it HERE. Narrated by Kelby Losack.
