Dogs Giving High Fives
Hello and welcome to the latest issue of The Ghoulish Times. My name is Max Booth III. I am the co-founder of Ghoulish Books, the host of the GHOULISH podcast, and the co-runner of the Ghoulish Book Festival. I don’t know why you’re receiving this newsletter. It is beyond anybody’s control. The newsletter arrives, and there is no stopping it. Every week, here it is again, generated from some unexplainable alien mathematics. It has happened again, and it will keep happening, and that is the way it will always be. Until it isn’t. And then there will be nothing. Sweet, beautiful nothing.
I’m pretty wiped out this week. Here is a video of my dog Frank giving me a high five.
And now, the news. The ghoulish news.
Betty Rocksteady is no stranger to Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and Ghoulish Books. We’ve published two of her previous novellas (see: Like Jagged Teeth and The Writhing Skies) and several short stories (check out “Elephants That Aren’t” in Lost Films).
It’s no surprise that we would eventually work together again on a third book. The question wasn’t if but when, and we are very pleased to announce the when is later this October, with her new novella / graphic novel hybrid Soft Places.
It is perhaps the weirdest thing she’s ever worked on, and we are so excited to be publishing it.
Behold, the cover jacket, also illustrated by Rocksteady.
Soft Places is a novella / graphic novel hybrid.
Johnna is found naked, wandering the streets with a mysterious head injury. Seemingly psychotic, she’s forced into the care of perverted psychiatrist Dr. Gonne. She must escape his clutches and return to a strange place she only half-remembers.
suggested for mature audiences
And, if you’re curious what we mean by “novella / graphic novel” hybrid, we literally mean the book is a mix of both standard prose and illustrated graphic novel sections. Here is a sample of Rocksteady’s interior artwork from the book:
Curious what the hell that’s about? Of course you are! Soft Places releases October 25th, but pre-orders are available right now through our webstore.
The first 200 paperback webstore pre-orders will receive a signed signature plate from the author, and each signature plate will include a unique creature illustration from Rocksteady as well. We anticipate these selling quickly, so don’t wait!
And since we’re in the cover jacket sharing mood, hell, here’s another! Matthew Revert’s jacket art for Danger Slater’s Moonfellows…
ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP INTO THE EXISTENTIAL ABYSS
Washington DC. 1906. The inaugural mission of the Moonfellow Program. A chance to shape the future of civilization as we know it. Our first tentative steps out into the stars…
It was a complete and unequivocal disaster.
Now a hapless gravedigger finds himself among the handful of survivors stranded on the lunar surface—forced to contend with madness, conspiracies, and whatever-the-fuck that thing is on the dark side, picking them off one by one.
This is the 100% true-ish story of the brave men and women we abandoned on the moon.
