All Aboard the Social Media Death Spiral
Looking forward to seeing you in Virginia!
Trying to be proactive on social media makes me feel like that guy in the Stephen Crane poem: "A man said to the universe- 'Sir, I exist'." And then the universe basically says that it's not obliged to care...
Hello, I exist too!
I ran a popular website for years, only for social media and spambots to eat it in the mid-2000s. I'm hoping Substack might be a place to rebuild. Who knows, eh?
I think you're absolutely right about social media. It's slowly turning against us all. We've fed the Algorithm, prayed to it, sacrificed to it, and in a cooled room under the ground, the Algorithm has been summoned from the world of 0s and 1s, and now it's coming for us. All hail the Algorithm or perish. Or just perish regardless. In a thousand years the Algorithm will still be spoken of. In a thousand years its name will be found in ancient texts. In a thousand years its iconography will resurface and perhaps it will be resummoned, like an ancient evil.
The Hotel is a nice atmospheric ghost story about a haunted... can't remember. A haunted something anyway. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000mrcg/episodes/player
Or if you'd like something weirder, I recommend The Sink, which is great fun: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08vxsk3
if you like night vale try Radio Rental!
It sucks that these companies are going down. Mastodon and BlueSky have been places where one can start over, but the problem is the starting over.
